I like to stew it, let it cool and have it with yoghurt.  I reckon it's kept me really healthy this year especially in the early stages of my pregnancy.

My girlfriend makes a great rhubarb cake, I think it's from the BBC goodfood website, and had the rhubarb laid on top of the cake mix and then at the end of cooking a ginger syrup is poured over the top - ummmmm :) superb with a bit of greek yoghurt. Also great for making jam with blackcurrants and raspberries

I make rhubarb and ginger jam - fantastic on Cornish icecream!

We love it!

I recently poached some on the hob in just a splash of orange juice, a knob of root ginger diced up (not too big or it's not nice to chew on) and 4tbs of honey.  Really lovely - AND some of the stalk were pretty thick, but worked a treat.

It's a recipe from the Valentine Warner What To Eat Now (Spring & Summer) book from TV series.

Ok maybe I'll keep it then and try some other things!  Think I've only had supermarket rhubarb before so it might taste different which I hadn't really thought of.

Kind of does seem a shame to hack away at an established plant, especially as there is only really that there and the cherry tree, the rest is all weeds!

You could either keep the plant and give away the stalks or dig up the plant and donate it to a fellow allotmenter?

Badger: quite right. Try giving it a bit of TLC, and next Spring, pull only nice young tender stalks, and I'm sure you'll change your mind   :D
The trouble with rhubarb is that it doesn't need much work, so more often than not it's just stuck in a corner, never watered, never fed. No surprise if you get bitter, tough old stalks  ::)
Someone should start a Rhubarb Appreciation Society  ;)

You're right tode, I don't take care of my rhubarb - what type of feed does it like? General purpose? tomato??

I'm not a rhubarbologist, but always put some straw and a bit of compost round the stalks, with a small handful of hoof and horn. Works fine. And water from time to time  ;)
If yours hasn't been looked after, I'd shove a really good packet of compost round it, and fork it in lightly.
Good eating  :tongue2:

I hated it as a child, my mum just stewed it and I found it stringy and nasty.

However, having discovered a hundred and one ways to cook it, it's growing on me. I love it combined with sweet apples in a crumble with loads of custard and it makes a fabulous rhubarb and ginger jam.

I've also discovered runner beans. My mum always bought them huge and hairy (shudder) but since I've discovered stringless varieties and can pick them young, I'm addicted and they're my toddler's favourite veg  :D.

I think that the comment about it being 'a generation thing' is right. My dad, for example, hated all vegetables until he left home and discovered that they could still have colour and shape after being cooked  ::)!
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

Can you do anything else with it apart from crumble?  I can't eat anything with flour which doesn't help at all!
Rhubarb ice cream is delicious - just make ordinary vanilla ice cream and stir in lots of rhubarb puree before freezing.
Or rhubarb cheesecake with a ginger biscuit base - I find rhubarb much more palatable if made into something really creamy  :)

That sounds good  :tongue2:  Would a sorbet be a bit too sharp?

I've always been told to add a few leaves of Sweet Cecily herb when you cook the rhubarb and you won't need to use much sugar at all.
It also works with any bitter fruit, cooking apples, currants, etc
