i think the only way is to try not to get it in the first place protect as much as possible with netting and fleece . famous last words sounds good though but not so easy

What exactly does cr fly do?  I don't think we ever get it, we have a really good crop both inside and out - mind you, we never thin ours out, we just try to sow them quite thinly.

plant a border of marigolds around your carrot bed. that's all I did, no carrot fly evident in my Paris markets, and it looks lovely. even won 2nd prize for said marigolds at village show...

Yorkie- (moderator) - I wasn't advocating the use of anything illegal, I was asking what the legal equivalent was!!!

I said "what are the bromophos equivalent treatments then for carrot fly"...meaning "what else will achieve the same end but in a legal way"

I wouldn't use anything illegal, nor advise others to do so, and I'm sure I didn't even see the HUGE photo that DD posted on the thread earlier then...

Still haven't seen any better suggestions than enviromesh or marigolds...

You'll have to try a bit harder to get onto the norty step then I'm afraid 

I think the general consensus for carrot root fly is mesh from the day of planting - marigolds or onions or anything else companion-wise has very mixed reports on this forum anyway

I am very lucky as my plot is a walled area, no carrot fly can get that high!   Has anyone tried glass walls around the carrots??   greenhouse glass/plastic sheet, held in place by little stakes... the fly will not be able to fly over the glass/plastic

  Wow, thanks for all the great advice. I'm going to try the resistant varieties next year, but will all a mesh barrier for good measure and make it all look pretty with marigolds!
