Moving a Grape Vine
« on: August 25, 2009, 15:00 »
I have a grape vine that is growing at the back of my plot. It is against a fence, backed by mature trees and also smothered with weeds. Not really had the time to do anything with it this year, but it is quite mature and spits out many small bunches of grapes. I was thinking that I could move it in from the fence, during autumn maybe and then it would have less competition for moisture and nutrients. Is this the right thing to do and what else I can do to improve its chances?

I think you'd have a heck of a job moving a mature vine. Why not take some hard wood cuttings in the autumn & try growing a new vine that you can put where you want instead?

I agree with Greengirl.  The thing with vines is that because you should never feed or water it (even in drought), it has to find its own source (hence good bunches of grapes), the roots can go straight down for 10ft.  If you ever go to a vineyard, look at the trunks of the vines, they can be pretty thick.

Had a grape vine for 10 years, moved it. It died, never recovered from the move at all.

Another one agreeing with greengirl, hard wood cuttings are dead easy with grapevines. BTW we have ours for the dolma (stuffed vine leaves) - delicious  :)
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
