Asparagus bed depth

Morning,

In the process of building out my plot and would like some advice on the bed I've set aside for asparagus.

The bed area is 8' x 4' which should be plenty enough for 8-10 crowns. Now my soil doesn't drain too well and is medium to heavy clay so on the understanding asparagus needs well drained soil I was going to build a raised bed for them.

But how deep? Was considering 6". Will that be sufficient?

Built my asparagus bed about 10" deep....apprx 4' x 4'...but obviously less plants...
plenty of well rotted horse muck...all the old potting compost I could muster...and still adding more as I empty the tommy pots/buckets...

Forgot to add asparagus plants..the roots tend to rise to the suface as they grow..my bed is only half full..so will add more compost/muck ect as and when.....best of luck..PAH

Add whatever sharp, not play, sand you can get. That will also help drainage. Asparagus truly hates sitting with wet feet and will quickly rot at the roots. When you plant out the crowns, mound a ball of sand over which you'll spread out the roots. this ensures the crown itself won't sit in water and can continue to put out new roots, which can be massive so don't tempt fate with overcrowding.
