Tomato ripening time...
« on: August 19, 2009, 12:03 »
I have quite a few green Gardeners Delight toms that look to be full size. Does anyone know what the sort of time it'll take for them to ripen. I appreciate that there are many factors that affect the ripening, but I was just wondering about a 'ball park' figure.

Thanks in advance

Jeff

must be something in the air, mine haven't changed colour yet either, in the greenhouse and at the allotment I have some lovely looking tomatoes, really good size but still very green   we've got out allotment show next weekend so i've got fingers crossed they're gonna go this week !

If they're in the greenhouse - throw a ripe banana in there!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I found one of my plants had collapsed and the stem had broken. I left the fruit on the vine, took them home and put them on the kitchen windowsill to ripen off. They are still stoicly green, despite the bananas I placed nearby.

That was over a week ago.

Put them in an enclosed space with the banana.

Put them in an enclosed space with the banana.

Does that definately work,  I know it does for things like Avocado's.  Wasn't sure about Toms,  I picked some "Green" a few weeks ago, and stuck them in a bag with a banana, no signs of anything happening even after 3-4 days.

We ended up slicing them, and cooking them in flour an egg, as fried green tomatoes.

Would have thought it best to leave on the plants till they ripen naturally, only pick when green if frost likely. Here in Suffolk have been picking my gardeners delight since mid July, now overwhelmed with them!

Hi Poodle,

Absolutely, but I had a plant collapse and the stem snapped, so its not a matter of choice for me, unfortunately...  :(

Welcome to the forum, by the way!  :)

Mine staying  very green and some gone brown, suspect blight, have been watering like mad but put two plants in a bucket so probably running out of water and food. Have been feeding as well, need a load of warmth and sun but its rained here in Bakewell area again today.
8)Summer is going to come in September when I have a holiday.

Mine started to ripen the other day, I've had quite a few since... :D

I'm glad I grew some in the plastic greenhouse - I lost all my outdoor ones to blight >:(

Weve got tumbling toms - fully grown on the plant for 2 weeks at least, no ripening. On window sill - no ripening. On window sill surrounded by increasingly manky banana - no ripening!! Green tom chutney anyone?!

Tomatoes need warm weather to ripen. Hard luck if you live in the north or west.
