What can I still grow
« on: August 17, 2009, 20:38 »
Hello
I was just wondering what I can still I can still grow now that I've dug all my spuds up (which the damn slugs had eaten plenty of >:().
I was wondering about turnips, is it too late?

Thanks

John

I've not grown turnips but I'd have thought it was too late, based on this chart
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks yorkie
looks like I'll be leaving it empty til next year.

I might put my garlic in there next month for a change as I put it in the same bed 2 years running and didn't have a fantastic crop this year so a change of scenery might do it good

Local garden centre had all their seed all reduced to 50p so the packet of turnips seeds I bought are going in.  ??? ???

Actually the packet says: Ready in Just 8 weeks.

So I'll find out the direct way. It's only 50p  :D :D :D

and you can always eat the tops as greens if you don't get any turnips -- as you say, 50p  :D

That was the idea.
Even if small I want them for casseroles and stews so I might chop up 5 instead of 3.

Can you stir fry the top?

Yes, you can stir fry them, steam them, add them to anything where you might use spinach. I don't use the massive old leaves though as they can be a bit tough and prickly  ;)
