Snail egg caviar
« on: August 17, 2009, 12:40 »
Has anyone ever eaten snail eggs..? You know, the nice little bundles of perfect white spheres you dig up in the garden.

Apparantly they taste good and there are even small scale producers selling it as caviar!!!

I found a few clusters of eggs this morning and am contemplating eating them. Anyone already tried them...?

Bit of a different way to control them!

Sorry but ugh!! Mind you I can't bear the thought of the posh caviar either.

I'm really not inclined to try this one -- I just squish 'em  :tongue2:

Are you sure someones not pulling you leg ? Can't think of anything worse, frankly, and I'm sure if they were in some way edible the French would eat 'em! and I've never heard of that ( and we've got a commercial snail grower near us)

Well, cut off my legs and call me shorty, as my mum used to say ( I dont know why) Just LOOK at the price! AND you have to have a special spoon ( now I know why the beluga caviar always tastes odd - it's the wrong spoon!) Still sounds gross to me though. I don't think  Tode and I will be adding it our LeClerc shopping lists any time soon despite being connaysewers of gourmet foods in France! :tongue2:

The local snails seem to like nesting in a couple of my planters and i was supprised that they manage to dig a hole 3" deep to lay their eggs when the snail shell is still on the surface.
Don`t fancy the snail caviar but the chooks love the eggs.

I'd probably give it a go, but I can't imagine it would be worth the effort.

Mmm...would all the snail eggs I'm finding at the moment keep for Christmas presents?....I know how much my family appreciate produce from the allotment!

Well,.......I tried them.    Even got hubby to try a few.

Disapontingly they didn't taste of anything.

Bit sort of crunchy and 'popped' in your mouth, there was a slight nutty after-taste but that was the only dscernable flavour. Weren't too gross, not slimy at all but definitly not worth the effort (or cost OMG!) to collect.

I think there was something on Gardeners questiontime the other day about them too.

oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained. (Although what i thought there was to gain i have no idea!)
