Cut and come again Rocket ? Lettuce
« on: April 26, 2007, 18:49 »
We have a bumper crop of rocket although only on a small raised bed - half a square metre. We are happily breaking off leaves (and flower sets - I know I musnt let them go to seed ) and they taste delicious.
and I assume the leaves will grow again.
Could we do the same with lettuce? Or can you cut the whole lettuce off and leave in the root to grow again :?:
Former biochemist, now experimenting and having fun. :-)

You can pick the outer leaves from salad bowl lettuce & it will keep growing.

Some folks cut off Little Gem & then get a bonus crop when the root regrows.

That's what i do WG cut the lettuce off and then cut a cross in the stump and a new lettuce regrows.

This happened to my Webbs lettuce last year, I cut some early (So as not to have a glut) but left the stumps as I was not great on space saving etc. but in a few weeks a new lettuce grew qat the side it was fab. more baby lettuce at the end of the season.

What variety are you growing, I tried a few leaves of my rocket yesterday and they were very bitter :?:

 Ashamed to say I did not record exact variety - I think they were just called "Herb Rocket". Today I bought a different type called "Wild Rocket, said to be "stronger" .......... perhaps these are yours and the "strong" equals "bitter" :?:  Going to sow them tomorrow,
