Would you say these outdoor cucumbers are ready?

Would you say these cucumbers are ready? We harvested one of a similar size at the start of the week and it was rather dry and bitter... Never having grown outdoor cucumbers before I'm not really sure what to expect! (I do know I have to peel them  ::) !

IMHO yes.

Outdoor cucumbers are different to glasshouse ones, which are more like those you buy in the supermarket. Outodoor ones reach about 5 - 6 ins generally, and should swell quite quickly

They are a bit spiny, although these just rub off. I don't always peel them, it depends on how tough the skin is.

Hope that helps  :D

I tried one of mine yesterday and it was horrible.  :tongue2: I peeled the skin but the flesh was very bitter and inedible.  The kids were so disappointed :(  Thought about putting them in a batch of picalilli.  Has anyone else tried this?

Have you got more than one plant?
In my experience it is unusual but you do get the odd plant that produces bitter fruit.

Don't leave them too long as they get more tough skinned and bitter but if you have a couple of plants you should be OK. I have three and am picking three or four ccumbers a day and gradually falling behind as they accelerate!

If they go yellow leave them to the slugs. When still green they're usually lovely.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
