cauliflower gone wrong!!
« on: August 14, 2009, 22:04 »
HI All,

I wonder if any of you can help me with this.  This is the firet time I have grown some cauliflowers which have come out with nice large heads of florets about 6 inches across. I've taken up two of them now and they both have had a ratehr unpleasent taste to them. :( Does anyone have any ideas why this may be please.

Thanks
Paul

You don't like cauliflower
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

No pushrod i really enjoy it :tongue2:, but this has a slightly bitter acidic taste and a slight green toinge to the florets.  However i'm sure sarcastic comments like that just help to encourage new gardeners like myself  >:(

Mad medic, I see you've only been a member for a couple of hours.

When you've been on this forum a bit longer you'll realise that we are a friendly bunch who may tease each other a little but are very rarely sarcastic.  Pushrod is one of those friendly members and will have meant no harm.  :D

I'm afraid I don't grow cauli's so can't answer your specific problem but others may do so.

P.S. Feel free to pop over to the Welcome forum and introduce yourself if you'd like to.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You should try to fold or tie some of the cauli leaves over the flower head to keep it white.  That should improve the flavour too.

Are you really mad and are you a doctor ?

Oops hope i haven't lost the board a member  :( :(
Wasn't meant to be sarcastic - honest . The green tinge could be responsible and as aunt sally said excluding light from the developing florets could help - i use clothes pegs to hold the leaves in place

I'm sure no one could have taken offence just because you're not keen on cauliflower.  I love it but it doesn't win me friends  ;)

Cloths pegs !  What a good idea !  Never thought of that but I do use them for all sorts of other things on the lottie  :)

Hi Guys,

Apologies guess i spend too much time working in the smoke where most people are sarcastic and unfriendly.  Thanks for the tips Aunt Sally, my garden has sun most of the day so i'll try your tips on my last few Caulis.

Aunt Sally - to answer your question i'm as mad as a hatter (but in a good way) and i'm a Paramediic not a doctor:)

See all these subtle comments flight right over my head as i just dont do subtle :tongue2:

Cooperman - I have no idea what type of cauliflower it was, they were young shoots for sale in the local garden centre and it was one of those 'well why not' moments.  As for food the new soil is a 50-50 mix of top soil and compost and i've been feeding them liquid fertiliser once a week and a healthy watering in between.

My garden gets full on sunlight 80% of the day so any thoughts on what would be a good variety?  Also suggestions gladly accepted for some nice winter veg to grow.

Take care all i'm off to see the queen of hearts!!
