stress of chicken and dogs
« on: August 11, 2009, 05:32 »
I have 3 chickens (of which two are now laying every day), coop etc. bought in June. My problem is that despite massive effort, my two dogs don't get along with them and it is causing stress all-round!! I wondered if anyone would know if it is possible to sell on to a home without persecution? :(

Hi and welcome
do you mean sell the dogs or the chickens, are they young dogs,  how did you introduce them to the chickens ?

we got our springer when she was 5 months and although she has some problems none are chicken related we gradually got her used to them first on a lead, and then off lead around the one's in pens and then back on lead around the freerange one's a stern no if she tried to jump at them, now at 3 I trust her she takes no notice of them even the day olds - her only vice  is the silkies she likes to bury her nose in their bottoms I think its all that fluff

you must be consistant

As poppies said - sell the chickens or the dogs ?

As for being persecuted about it who would do that ? Or did you mean prosecuted ?  It is certainly not against the law to sell animals.

We don't allow people to sell anything on these forums but I know that some of our members have recommended "prelove" for selling animals. http://www.preloved.co.uk/

Hi. I have dogs and ducks and chickens, but to be fair plenty of space for them all. Even so I had an accident last week and the puppy stood on one of the ducks  :( .
If you really can't cope and or don't have the time to spend with them to ensure they get on, then the best thing would be to re-home. If it's the chickens then post where you are located, someone on here may be able to take them. If it's the dogs, then there are plenty of organisations that will take them for you, try the Yellow Pages for local rescue centres.
Good luck.

My dog hates our girls.  She's really jealous.

Initially rushed the mesh, snarling and hackles up.  Now, just ignores them, but I wouldn't trust her an inch!

So, hens have a big walk in pen of their own in the corner of the garden, and the dog has the rest.......well she was here first.

my springer is fine with the chickens now, she was quite scary to start with though, she would look at them and kind of tremble, not she only gets jealous if i'm making a fuss of them and tries to round them all up and put them back in their run   (i have to make a fuss of them when she's not around)

Hi Karen123,  Sorry to hear your girls are not getting on with your dog.  Our cocker spaniel (nearly 7 yrs old) has turned into something of a "chicken-dog" (as in "sheep-dog") if we take her with us on an evening walk & stop for a coffee she starts to fret about 8.45pm as she knows its nearly their 'bedtime'. Once we arrive home, she MUST go straight out to check that they are OK and only settles down once they are tucked up safely.  She has never given us one second of worry with our girlies (they've been with us about 2months now) and always lets us know when they've laid so we can collect their eggs (once she's passed them for inspection - she literally sticks her head into our collection bucket has a quick sniff then lets me bring them in) However, our daughter's Cav pup (11 mnths old now - we puppy sit whilst she & OH are in work) was a bit boisterous at first but we persevered and he's now much better with them - his vice is to wait until they're all out of their run so he can nip in quick & pinch some bark to chew on!!!  Do hope you can get your problem sorted & keep both - Good luck!!   :)

hi, ive been very luck, my dog id fab with the girls, but i still wouldnt leave him unattened with them. its a possibility that you could get help with socialising the dog around the chickens, but lots of chicken owners on here wouldnt let the dogs anywhere near the hens, and they manage to have a peacefull existance side by side-good luck

It took me a while to get the dog used to the chickens/ducks and vice versa. Persevere.  ;)

I agree with all the comments listed - you must persevere!
We have 3 dogs, all of whom know that the chucks are 'part of our pack'. They will see off a pigeon that lands in the garden, but allow the chickens to free range without batting an eyelid.

If a stern NO doesn't work, re-enforce this by using a sports drink bottle filled up with water, give the dog a quick squirt on the nose when you say NO. Its quite harmless, but will ensure your dog is listening to you!! A couple of squirts, and they won't bother your chucks (hopefully!)
Good luck!

I have one dog who I can trust with the chickens and my other one is only 15 months and at the moment thinks chasing them is a game (when they crouch near her she leaves them alone and walks away baffled , so she is always on a lead when we go out to save the hens any stress)
Staffies are softer than you think.
