Copped this off my neighbour, seeing as he has bumper crops of beans every year I thought i would do the same.

put a layer of carpet in a propogator lid or something similar and then the beans, then more carpet, pile side to the beans. then water them.

he says it helps by seeing which ones germinate so he doesnt waste his time planting duds.

mine have been in there 4 days now and nothing is happening? any ideas why? they are very wet mind.

too wet???  why carpet?  I've done it with peas and broad beans betwwen layers of kitchen towel, but I just plant loads of runners in little pots and if they germinate, okay, if they don't, I dig the dud one out and plant another til I've got enough growing to put outside

maybe carpet because the long pile totally envelopes the bean?

im worried they might be to wet , yep.

i would have though a shoot or something would have shown by now.

when I did my broad beans they were over a week before they germinated.  Don't know if runners are the same

I just put beans in an icecream tub lined with layers of wet kitchen towel or news paper.  Takes at least a week to start to germinate, depending on temperature of cause.

posted a thread before reading this, I am having problems with my beans this year as they seem to be going mouldy and rotting, emailed t&m and was given some tips but then last night I spoke to the elder chap (Dave) and he talked me through his method,  soak the bean seed for around 3 hrs between sheets of kitchen paper with water from the kettle thats been boiled and left to cool, once the skin has winkled and is soft nip it carefully with some nail clippers to break it, then sow them in moist compost in a heated propogator, this I am trying and will let u know.

well i have 100% germination, those little bollotti's are up, all of them, no mould, no rot. This appears to be a top method. Cheers Dave
