Strawberries and used compost advice please
« on: August 08, 2009, 08:57 »
I have two questions:

1) I have been pegging down my strawberry runners onto submerged plots... what do I do with them once they have taken root (do they need planting out straight away, overwintering in pots, etc?)

2) I had a few Hunter potatoes in a large trug and took them all out last night; can I riddle and re-use the compost and it still looks really nice, or will all the nutrients have gone?

Thanks for reading,
Andrew

Unlike their fruit, strawberry plants are very hardy and can be stuck straight in the soil to over-winter.

Spuds are very heavy feeders and will have no doubt sucked the life out of the compost. I'd use it as a soil conditioner.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD.

I don't actually have a bed for them at the moment, how well will they do in pots?

Make sure they're in a decent sized pot so they can grow as much as possible this year ready for at least some fruit next year.
