why cant i use hay

I know some people that do use hay, but i think if you can use an alternative then thats better, hay can sometimes have spores in which wouldnt be good for the hens respiatory, i use newspaper and chopped straw      nicky

The chickens may eat the hay which could then give them problems with their crop (where they store food)  

It is therefore best not to use it
