Potato question.
« on: August 07, 2009, 10:43 »
I'm off up the lotty in a bit and was gonna dig up some pots. Is it OK to dig them up and pop them straight into a hessian sack or do I have to clean them and make sure their dry first?

......I hate being a complete div! lol!

Not necessarily clean, but at least dry.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If the skins have any moist/damp soil attached when you bag them they will rot in no time at all,and the rot will spread. If you dig them tomorrow leave them on top of the ground for a couple of hours before bagging them up,but they must be dry.It would be a shame to lose them after all your hard work.Patience is a virtue.

I dug up a few KE the other day and left them for a few hours to dry out in the sun (I dug them as I was scared that they had blight but I was overreacting) I then wiped clean with a dry cloth that allowed me to see any holes/marks/scabs, and used those tonight for tea
Mine will go into hessian sacks too, but will be checked every week for any rotting ones

dig up the spuds and leave them on top of thesoil as long as possible ,

allow them to dry and form a skin , no need to wash them , but thats individuals choice

Humble apologies.

I now notice that you didn't say "I will check them every week".
