I asked a very similar question!!

I think, removing them is the best option, digging them in just re-sows them in your bed. The advice I got was if weeding when dry then let them stay on the surface so the sun will dry them up and kill them. If it's wet, remove them so they don't re-root.

Mute question for me though, been away for a month and got back to a JUNGLE of weeds and all this rain!!

Don't dig out every tiny little weed. Take out anything that is appears to obviously be a perennial weed, and turn in the rest if digging or let them dry on the top if hoeing. That is assuming it ever gets dry enough to hoe ! Otherwise you'll be there 24/7 trying to take out every tiny annual weed

There is no problem in digging in tiny annual weeds, but this is not always practical in between rows.

Keep the hoe moving!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's what the hoe is for - it's welded to my hand at this time of year  :)

Bindweed can be difficult. Take out the whole root or it will grow back(even a tiny bit in the ground will re-grow)

Basically if you have a bit then you can deal with it by hand. If you have a lot Glyposate is the way to go but you may need to use 2 applications to fully kill it.

with regards to glysophate what is the best way to apply? i'd be using a sprayer does it need to soak the leaves etc.
i have loads of bindweed at the moment because when i took the patch over last year it was in quite a stae so like a complete novice i rotovated it :( now i have miles of bindweed but i do think i am getting on top of it 1 section i spent 2 weeks on my hands and knees and took loads of it out, i still got some showing through but at least its kind of under control.

You need to make sure the leaves are sprayed but not to the point of run-off.

Take care with wind drift, not to get any spray on anything you are growing - if that's a risk, use a trickle bar on a watering can.

Whichever method you use, make sure you do not use the same container for anything else e.g. normal watering or feeding, or you may well kill the plant with residual weedkiller!

Avoid applying it when the leaves are already wet, or if it will rain within 6-8 hours.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

While my crops are growing I hand weed and hoe.  While a bed is not being used in the autumn/winter months then I have a really good dig for weed roots and then keep on top (as much as I can) before planting.  I have a real mares tail/bindweed problem, but it seems to work for me so far. I dont do weedkiller, not as a 'save the planet' kind of thing but its just not for me.  Eventually theyll give up - and I am looking forward to retiring and seeing a pristine plot  :D
