Useful urine

I thought I would share this little gem with you, though I don’t expect many replies apart from maybe the veganic lot as most people would not want fellow allotmenteers to know if they were practising this one!

I had known for a long time that neat urine is a great compost accelerator and have never bought a box of Garotta to do the same job that I can do myself for free.

But I recently read that the same wasted resource can be used diluted 1:3 as a plant nutrient feed. Has anyone heard of this one as it would be a great saving on liquid feeds.

This is particularly interesting to me as our allotment has just requested another £12 from each plot to pay for an on-site toilet to be constructed and plumbed in – seems a waste of time and nutrients to me!

What do others think?

Mrs B throws away anything that has any sign of a slug/snail taking a nibble.... Let alone using urine for a liquid feed. :nowink: :nowink:
I think I'll stick to comfrey tea thanks.  ;) :D

I think most of our lot would happily pay 12 quid for a bit of privacy!

And yes, Mrs D thinks along the same lines as Mrs B.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Interesting, I may well try it on the compost not sure about a liquid feed, unless I find a coloured spray bottle so no-one sees

I had heard something similar about using it diluted for plant feed, but I think it is the 'euuuuwww'  ;) factor that stops most people. (As well as privacy issues!) On top of that, we don't use human 'manure' because:

1. we are meat eaters and
2. it could spread disease

Urine is apparently sterile as it comes out, however, so people really shouldn't be too worried about using it, but we have a convention that it should only be produced out of sight of others. Of course, there is nothing to stop you from collecting your own at home and using it on the allotment!

flushing a toilet uses 6 ltrs of water (about 1 1/2 gallons) each flush. The average person urinates 6-10 times a day, apparently, so saving it for the compost heap or as feed would save 36 - 60 ltrs of water per person, per day. Should we ask for a reduction in water rates?  :)

Great idea!!
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

yes I heared that it can be used as a compost accelerator so on two occuations I have poured it onto the pile of wood shavings I have. I would like to use it as feed as well but have been reluctant.
BUT if used often and lots  people on the site used it can u imagine the smell?

It's funny, I was at the urinal the other day thinking 'what a waste' and I was going to post a thread, but thought better of it!  :D

I wee on my heap when no one's looking, but it's at the front of the plot, so I als have a yellow 'p*ss bucket' in the shed for when I and the children feel the need. I pour this on the heap too.

Never used it as a feed, but I wouldn't hesitate. Urine is sterile and there are (to my knowledge) no diseases that are passed through it (though I suspect someone will prove me wrong on this!  :tongue2: )

The guy on the next plot pees on a bramble patch next to our fence and I regularly eat the blackcurrants - he was horrified but it really didn't bother me.

I guess that's just me.  ::)

Steer clear of number twos though, unless it's treated.

If I'm honest, I'm sometimes tempted to do it when the old boys ARE looking!

I fancy making a name for myself. :D

Although 'P*ss Boy' probably isn't that cool...

I have got the family to use a bucket and poured it onto the compost heap as an accelerator, I wouldn't like to put it fresh onto plants we are going to eat tho  :tongue2: Have you ever pulled into a lay-by on a sunny day?  The smell of wee is disgusting.
As an ex-nurse who has, 'seen it all' I still don't like to see men wee in public.  If ever I have accidently 'caught one at it' I find it really embarrasing.  Women have to wait and go in private, just cos it's easy for men I think they should have to wait like we women do!

Be fair, you can multi-task; don't begrudge us the odd free-wee.
