halloween pumpkin
« on: August 04, 2009, 22:00 »
I grew 2 'sunshine' pumpkins with a view to providing halloween carving material for the grandkids :) 1 pumpkin has set on each plant and grown to football size, and they are beginning to turn orange.....so far so good 8)
Now the question ::) do i now just leave these on the plants till the end of the season? and if i have to, will this stop other fruit setting? You see i'd like to taste one as well......or is that asking for too much

This site suggests you can do either.

http://www.hgtv.com/decorating/harvesting-pumpkins/index.html

It's American, but in this instance they may actually know a bit about the subject. :tongue2:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you want to use them for Jack O'Lanterns make sure you leave some of the stalk so that it acts as a handle when you take the top off.  So many shops here sell them without any stalk and they don't look nearly as good at the american ones.

We've had numerous halloweens in the USA and when my girls were small one of the big events leading up to the day was to visit the pumplin patch and choose their pumpkins for decorating.

Mumofstig,

Are those the seeds I sent?  Mine has also produced a couple of very large pumpkins.  I am really looking forward to carving and eating these!

Thanks for the link DD. I have quite a few small pumpkins that are already orange and I was wondering how to tell if they are ready to eat --- I'll check the stem for cracks  :D
