Help with teeny chicks please
« on: August 03, 2009, 22:40 »
It's a bit late in the day I know, but my eggs are hatching and I suddenly realise that there are things that never crossed my mind. Please don't tell me off, I have planned carefully, but some things ... well.

How agile are tiny chicks? the nest is about two inches high, will they be able to get back in if they get out?

How do they eat? does the mother give them food from her crop? I have chick crumbs in there for them and I know the yolk sac keeps them going at first.

My first chick hatched this evening but ma is still sitting tight, will the hatchling just stay with her till everyone is out?

It is very exciting after a disappointment yesterday when I found one of the eggs on the floor of the coop stone cold. It was full of a chick that looked perfect. Don't know if she knocked it out accidently or it died and she chucked it. Anyway fingers crossed.

3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.

Hi and congratulations on the little chicks. Their mum will teach them to peck at the feed and water - it's very sweet watching her teach the chicks. The little ones will be ok without food for a day or so  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.
