Moving Comfrey
« on: August 02, 2009, 20:17 »
Hi,
I have 2 comfrey plants on the lotty and would like to move them both to a better position. One is at a 3 leaf stage and the other doing quite well with quite alot of large leaves.
They were cuttings I planted back in April and I though I lost them and they suddenly popped up last month so really pleased. Not sure how big they grow when mature but the space I have given them at the mo is way too small and want to put them together in the corner of the plot.
Thanks

The only thing with moving comfrey is that it may still grow in the original place too!  It only takes a tiny bit of root to re-grow.  My original piece was in a pot on the old patio.  the root grew out the bottom of the pot, down through the paving slabs and grew out the side of the path.  I keep digging it out, but it comes back every year!!!!!! :D

I would leave moving it to the autumn, when growth is a bit slower. They need to be at least 3' apart really.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I think mine get to about 4ft, maybe a bit higher!  But I cut them down 3 or 4 times a year for compost and liquid manure!
