Still in shock! two chooks dumped at my gate!
« on: July 31, 2009, 07:38 »
Morning all! I am in total shock

my Husband got back from work this morning at 6.15 and found a plastic pet carrier outside our garden gate with two young chickens in it! and a label saying ' unwanted gift you have them' written on it!

Poor little chooks were terrifyed god knows how long they had been there! it is a small rabbit size carrier and they were crammed in  >:(

I will post some pictures later so you can help me with age and breed? also sex of the chooks they look to be about 16 weeks maybe?

they are in my rabbit run which has a house at one end, I dont mind taking them on as the poor things have been through enough already!

CAN YOU BELEIVE PEOPLE!!!  :( YOU HEAR OF THIS HAPPENING! BUT I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN TO US!!!!!!

Don't know where that poster is located though.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

There seem to be more and more reports of this. Integrity and plain old common sense were clearly left behind some time before the end of the last century!!!!!!!!!

I'm working up to sounding my age  :) :)

yes a white star is a white leghorn hybrid but could be a pure leghorn depends how big it gets white stars stay quite small!
I dont condone it at all but they are fab birds to get! a friend of mine had a box of cockerals dumped on her door

definately hens! the cream legbar cockerals are a completely different colour and the white stars have big floppy combs so if it was a boy its comb would be huge by now
i have been known to be wrong (hubby would say) but im sure they is girlies!
yay for blue and white eggies soon

So why on earth would someone do this?  they must have cost good money? if they are pullets I would have understood cocks being dumped!

hope this doesnt open the gates for us being the local animal rescue centre! I will have to put a sign on my gate!  I HAVE ENOUGH NO MORE ANIMALS PLEASE! LOL

Seriously though! I hope this does'nt become a common occurance it is well out of order!

and it is a bit worrying that someone must have known we already had chickens we are in the middle of nowhere with a thick hedge all round the garden ? feel like I am being watched now!

((Trina)) The 'being watched' feeling is horrid. Nevertheless, I wish someone would pass on some chickens to me ... I'm still waiting to pick up some ex-batts (I have a date now, but it's still ages away)!  ::)

I think I'd be glad that whoever did it realises that you will give them a good home, and bless their common sense for realising they couldn't do it themselves.

It would be best if people were a bit more thorough in their preparation so knew what to expect, but as you say, they could have done a lot worse than pass them on (if unannounced) to someone who would know what to do even if they couldn't keep them themselves.
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...

Lucky you indeed!!!!

I think you have to think of the mentality of these people...........

Right first off you have the now Trendy trend of keeping chickens......easy???  Well if you read up on them and have knowledge like on this site then it can be relativley smooth.

You can buy chicks at day old-16 weeks   so say they have brought them at 12 weeks.......as far as the person is concerned they should be LAYING as they are chickens???????   So they may have had them for 4 weeks and still no eggs...
useless chickens????

Then people forget about the cost and looking after them and housing ect....it may well be a trend but it is a trend that is fading quick :(

Just be grateful they chose you to have them, you are knowledgable and are not affraid to ask for advice.......   Oh and the people watching over you....I don't think it's like that  word gets round when you have chickens   believe me!!!
