« on: July 29, 2009, 09:05 »
I know this is probably really simple

I popped red drumhead cabbages in emmmm a few months ago now ( please dont ask me the date as I always forget to write it down) but they are huge and have taken over the bed they are in but how do i know when they are ready to pick, the hearts are looking god but is there a squeeze I need to do to test (you know what I mean )

Is the heart solid? If so how big is the solid bit?

These can grow to quite as size and they will sit there much longer than standard cabbage without running to seed. I've had them over-winter.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I usually eat the first of my crop when they are large enough to make a decent meal. This means that by the time the rest are fully grown we have eaten half of them, and by the time they go to seed there are not many left.

We are a family of three. Once the cabbage is large enough we eat it.
If all else fails read the instructions.

Good advice from the other posters, don't do what I did and leave them too long.
I lost a lot to splitting and they turned a bit manky.
Wish I'd thought to start eating them when smaller. Saying that I've had quite a few good ones and gave lots away.
