I posted earlier that the Pink Fir Apple were knobbly - just how knobbly is shown in the pics (if this link works)  About one third of the crop were like this - I assume this is not normal or they'd never be grown.

They are perfectly normal for pink fir apple  Knobbly but knice  :D

Anyone grown these before?

I was very disappointed with them. Only got them because they were cheap. Floury rather than waxy. Ok for mash though I suppose.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

I'll merge this with the potato harvest thread as we're trying to keep all in one thread to assist others.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sandy soil, slugs not a problem
Mimi - 1st early - quite small yield but small, pink, DELICIOUS salad potatoes
Charlotte - 2nd early - very large yield but got a bit bored with them eventually
Anya - 2nd early - lovely, waxy texture and nutty taste
Sarpo Mira - maincrop - one of the blight resistant varieties but VERY DISAPPOINTING. Yield pretty good but tough, hard skins and very dry flesh. Don't work for baking or roasting.

Yep... about right for PFA... some of mine are knobblier than that.... my nearly-5 niece asked me "...why are you growing alien potatos?".... I wouldn't grow them if it wasn't for the taste, the plants are sprawling thugs twice the size of a modern variety and the yield isn't great either.... but for potato salad when the new potatos are gone or mixed in as part of a roast veg medley.... yum!

Good grief:  I've never seen spuds like that. Must be a b----y nightmare to prepare.

As I said before, I wont be growing them again.  The ones Ive got left are sliced and put into casseroles.  They taste nice, but other varieties doo too, and with a lot less effort to prepare.

I just dug up Maris Piper,  very nice chips.  Not a great yield.  Full of scab but easily cut off as insides ok.

Here.... How come yours comes as chips? We have to peel ours, bung'em in fat and wait a bit before we gets chips!!

Maris who....??? Must give those a try.  ;)  ;)

Don't peel them, break them apart to get dirt out from behind knobbles.... boil for salads or roast, apparently they fry too, the flavour is superb, IMHO the best though I'd understand people from too close to France arguing for Ratte....

The top growth can be exhuberant to say the least and the yield isn't always great, but they give you a long-store maincrop that always tastes like a new potato, they're my plan B in case the Christmas spuds don't make it.....

 :tongue2: :D

Its what the chippys use for chips, so I have been led to believe.  Mine come out as ready made chips because I told them to.

They are main crop as you probably know already and are just pleading ignorance. :nowink:

Don't do too may not a great yield and very scabby..oh repeating myself.

I've had very little sign (if any at all) on my spuds over the last few years. Is scab a result of dryish soil conditions?

Guess I have been lucky - may be some potato types are more prone to it than others.

Scab is usually caused by soil that is too alkaline - plenty of manure should correct this problem.
