King Kestrels were not as big this year but still the best spud.     ;)
Ratte, not very big and 10% slugged.    :(
Surprised with your reds Joe, the slugs are not supposed to touch them, I wonder if anyone told them though.
 :) :) :)

I happened to glance at my main crop potato bed today and saw three NEW potatoe plants growing merrily away,  They have just pushed their way through the soil.  I obviously missed them when digging them up.   Should I leave them to see what happens or what?

I think I'd leave them until just before the first frost is due.... You might get some new potatoes!  ;)

Let them grow.

Hill them up & maybe protect from the frost.

BUT - have them up AND don't miss one - by next year so you don't run the risk of carrying disease over.

For instance the first appearance of blight is always in "volunteer" spuds like these, or discarded ones from that season. Blight & other diseases perpetuate in plant material. No material - no diseases.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Good idea this.  Our results so far:

First - Rocket - Good yield of potatoes with hardly any slug holes.
First - Foremost - Larger size potatoes and higher yields only a few with slug holes.
Salad - Charlotte - High yield of good sized salad potatoes with no slug holes.
Second - Kestrel - Reasonable yield of average size potatoes - hardly any slug holes.
Mains - Desiree - TBA.
Mains - Maris Piper - TBA (was disappointing last year).
Mains - Cara - High yield of average size, no slug holes.

Charlotte - dug up last of them today - perfect good sized crop - no slug damage at all.
Wilja - again fantastic crop - our fave spud - no slug damage.
King Edwards - only had a few of these so far, but good quantity - no slug damage.
Cara - Huge spuds with LOTS of slug damage - not sure we're going to get to taste much, if any.

All spuds were in the same bed - clay soil. They just seemed to go for the one variety!!

I have finally dug up the last of our potatoes
Even after nearly a week without rain the ground was still wet but my Desiree are safely in their sacks and ready to serve us through the winter. Because I have had to wait so long to dig them up the odd one had started to go rotten but on the whole a decent crop of good sized potatoes.
My Rocket were quite good but again had to wait to be dug due to the weather. Still using them now.

Firsts - Arran Pilot, 18lb, low yield but taste great
Seconds - Marfona, 42lb, good flavour but not as good as Arran Pilot
Mains - Sarpo Mira, 107lb, some huge spuds, jury is still out on taste and texture but looks like we had better acquire a taste for them!

Clay soil, has been very wet here but no blight, some slug damage on all 3 varieties particularly at the wetter end of each row (gently sloping) but have not had to throw many away.  Planted about 20 of each and was surprised at the difference in yields.

Not posted for a while but here's our spud results;

Charlotte;excellent yield(still plenty left and keeping well)bit of slug damage, excellent taste but will deffo grow more next year.

Valor;bad slug damage(this has been a big problem on the plot this year, some people have lost a lot of their crop),good yield but with the slug damage i don't have high expectations of them keeping well.May not bother with a main crop next year apart frpm PFA.

Pink Fir Apple;haven't lifted all of these yet but those that have been are superb as usual,no slug damage and wonderful taste;were going to try frying them as seen on Nigel Slaters programme last week, will always grow these.
Once upon a time I could control myself

I posted earlier that the Pink Fir Apple were knobbly - just how knobbly is shown in the pics (if this link works)  About one third of the crop were like this - I assume this is not normal or they'd never be grown.

first earlies;dont know some i had in the cupboard that had sprouted, but they grew well and tasted just dandy.
second earles;charlottes, grew well tasted lovely, although did get floury the longer they were in the ground and did get scab.
maincrop;maris piper had scab as well, blight was a problem on our site with tomatoes, the halum of the potatoes started showing signs, so i cut them down and the tubers were fine we had some nice size spuds although i did harvet them a bit early.
any ideas for stopping scab for next year?a jacket spud dont look so appetising when it looks like that.
i dont suffer with insanity..........i enjoy every minute of it.
