basic advice needed please
« on: July 27, 2009, 17:38 »
hi all

i live in a flat and have an allotment about 5 minutes down the road from me. only had my plot since september last year.
basic success so far spud, beans, lettuce, beetroot, onions, courgettes, and sweetcorn

got some parsnips and carrots in a raised bed but i failed to thin them out so although they have grown they are somewhat small.

anyway on my balcony at home i have 5 tomato plants bearing tomatoes they are in large pots, could i take these down the plot and shove them in the ground or would this move harm them?

next basic question i have a section on soil ready to plant something, can i plant carrots now? if so what do i do.
do i just mark a line in the soil and whack seeds in the earth? if so how deep do i plant them, is this what is done for any seeds that are not going to be started off in little pots?

thanks

ps also pickled a nice batch of beetroot today :)

Chances are it'd slow them down for a tad

There are some varieties of carrots you can sow now, bu@@ered if I know what varieties, but yeah, water the soil, mark a line, throw a few seed in at random intervals and then cover with a smidge more soil ( afaik max depth = 2 * smallest width of seed ) ... then cross your fingers and hope the mighty carrot god is watching over you ;)

There's a carrot variety called Autumn King or similar that can go in now  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
