cabbages looked ok but hearts are brown- what did it?

I thought I'd grown some lovely Hispi cabbages - 1st time trying -I was so proud of them  until I cut into them and there's a pale brown 'rotted' effect on lots of the inner leaves sort of like a trail so I suspect animal rather than disease.   I've composted them all. 

 :( :( :(

What did it and was it ok to put it in the compost.  I had a few holes on the outside but the brown didn't seem to be associated with them.  I didn't find anything inside.

I have never grown them,but i wonder if the brown core may be rot caused by the excessive rain.Hispi are a very tight variety,perhaps the leaves were excessively wet when forming.Cant offer any other explanation,sorry.They will be fine composted.Better luck next time.
