Slugs repellent
« on: April 21, 2007, 21:08 »
In the TV program "the big dig" I saw a woman putting bran around her plants to repell slugs.
I tried for the last 2 days and it seems to work.
No sneaky slimy critter where I put the bran!
Do not underestimate the therapeutic values of weeding!
1 dog, 2 children, 3 good reasons not to spread poison!

..That`s `cos it hasn`t rained,I use wood ash which feeds the plants when it rains so the slugs do not mind the hungry gap!!

Ive had success with sharp sand which at only 1.49 a bag from focus goes quite along way compared to other slug repellents, probably even cheaper elsewhere.

A force to be reckoned with

I'll try sharp sand tomorrow. I'm just back from my daily slug hunt and found a lot of those slimy things. But it has started to rain...

I have a dog and 2 children aged 5 1/2 and 3. I need something that is not toxic to them. Not even remotely...
Do you know any?
I've also tried eggshells which seems to work.
But these slugs are everywhere!

I've recently started using slug pubs and very successfully.  Just use any old pots/cut bottom off bottles and fill with cheap supermarket beer and dig into ground so opening is at soil level.  Each one seems to catch at least 10 slugs per night - where do they all come from??
Total beginner - please bear with me if I ask daft questions!!

If you can actually see the slugs, use a spray of 1/4 cup ammonia to 1 litre of water. The ammonia turns to nitrogen when it hits the ground, and it's also safe on leaves. A large hosta nursery I know uses this mix to protect their product.

Im guessing lily is of the organic ilk like myself?...and the less chemical or toxic the better.

as for slug traps/ pubs...they work but im also of the mind that they are an attractent...as are regular slug pellets, they have an attractent added to lure the slugs which may turn a garden that was relatively slug free...one or two spotted....so down goes the beer and pellets and wahey ! you now have thousands dead and thousands of others on route!

The whole copper tape/ wire idea still hasnt convinced me...glowing reports dummied down by reports of them crusing straight over them....
egg shells have had good reports...bran, sand, oats etc are good but the seond it rains you lose the fight...similar thing for slug pellets.

I DID see some new organic/safe slug pellets are now available which will be my choice if i end up with a slug problem....but they seemed a bit pricey and i havent heard any feedback about them yet?.

Easiest option and of most interest to the kiddlywinks is build a small wildlife pond near your veg...fill it with frog or toad spawn from a  friend and say bye bye slugs.

I am pleased to say that we are rather slug free! The frogs have discovered the slugs and eaten them!
Now I know that they will come back but the frogs are there to stay! We even provide shelter for the winter! B&B anyone?
