ive noticed my old boy neighbour puts all his collected weeds in his chicken run, nettles, sprouts etc. what sort of effect does this have on the birds apart from making them excited. sorry if i sound daft, im relatively new and learning fast!

Hi,
Don't worry chickens know what they can and can't eat.

Hi
I do the same - as my girls are confined to a run during the summer months I feel they can't graze as they would like to so I like to give them weeds to supplement their "greens" intake.  Plus if the weeds are pulled up roots and all, the soil on the roots contains little beastieswhich they enjoy!
They have a small amount of grass in their run but they enjoy the extra weeds, I think it makes the yolks really orangey!  (thats when they're laying - blooming bantam part-timers  :D)

when can you start giving them piles of weeds, mine are 5 weeks old and should be able to go in their run next week when it is finished.

My littluns enjoyed weeds, fresh pulled grass and veg clippings (like overgrown spinach beet) from about 5 weeks.
