Feather Lice?
« on: July 25, 2009, 12:42 »
I'm treating my girls for lice, the creamy things with the big body and little legs at the front. They've been doused with diatom, then louse powder (the shaker was easier than the big tub of diatom). Can't see anymore lice, but they have grey things along their feathers that look like a big version of midges that fly about in the summer. Are they feather lice and are they dealt with the same as the other lice?

Thanks in advance!  :D
8 chickens, 5 cats, 2 guinea pigs and 1 other half.

Thanks Roughlee Handled  :)

I've had a look at the links but they don't seem to mention the grey lice. I've googled for feather lice and thats what they are. They are proving a devil to shift on one of our hens. They are looking paler by the minute with all the powder billowing over them when they have a shake  :D The hens that is, not the lice!

Yes Tricky, they do seem hard to shift  :(

I've been putting Barrier Louse Powder on them, but I might try Johnsons Mite and Lice spray as it maybe will be more direct and it says it kills them. My other half read on the powder that its a deterent only and doesn't kill them  :(
