My attempt at Christmas spuds
« on: July 23, 2009, 11:50 »
I have carefully stored some of my seed spuds from the spring in very controlled conditions.

OK - so I found a few left overs in the shed.

Here they are in all their beauty.

The variety is Pentland Javelin.

Or they could be Swift.

Maybe Kestrel or Charlotte.

Even Ambo, Picasso or Sapro Mira. I don't know.

Anyway they've gone into what could be their final resting place here...

We'll see what happens, nothing to lose and no way am I paying the prices for "proper" Christmas spud seed!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Nice job DD. The really round ones should be the Swift.
Some garden centres are now stocking spuds so they are worth a look to see if you can find any.
Visit my website and view my potato blog and videos.

I'm not sure if they will be, actually. I started with the Swift, thinking about it, until I ran out & then continued with the PJ's, but could be any of the others!

No doubt if this works and I try to hold some back next year, it'll end in disaster!

With all the rain around, won't they just get blight?

I've just found a few too, so I wonder if it's worth all the work!  ;)

a) There's no blight (yet) in my area.

b) Spray is at the ready.

c) They'll not get it whilst they're 4 inches under!

It'll be a few weeks before they poke up, that's the time to start worrying, not now.

I've got some Charlottes that I harvested last month, wrapped in paper and sitting in the fridge. Plan to plant them in a couple of weeks in bags so they can go in the greenhouse when the season changes. Fingers crossed!
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!
