Pentland Javelin potatoes
« on: July 21, 2009, 17:43 »
I dug some of my PJ up yesterday. And whilst there weren't loads on the 2 plants I dug up they looked good. (I have grown more than 2 plants.... I thought I would just dig up as and when I need them) Not sure if this is the right way to do it.

My question is after drying them out and washing them, after boiling them the skins just came away and they fell a bit. Is this normal for home grown spuds?

It didn't detract from the taste of them.

Pentland javelins are a first early variety, and will probably only need about 12 weeks to grow to a reasonable size.I lfted my whole row about 3 weeks ago,now being stored in a cool porch in a hessian sack.I had not grown this variety before but was very pleased with the yield, and they were so clean looking.Cant help with the cooking side as OH wont let me anywhere near the cooker. ;)

I always steam my new potatoes to stop them falling apart.

This has been raised several times of late.

Steaming as suggested & also lifting a few days before eating helps.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I dug all my PJ's up and they are stored in the dark, but the only ones that have fallen apart are the ones that got overcooked, otherwise they've been great!

Mine have been great too, but I agree with DD. Lift them a few days before cooking. ;)

I like to try something different every year, but PJ's are my "fail-safe" backup.

I always grow PJ's, so this year I put in PJ's along with Home Guard and Arron Pilot, I then did a taste test with family and neighbours and half the street, interestingly the PJ's got all the votes but one. As mentioned I always steam mine.

I always steam my new potatoes to stop them falling apart.

Steaming seems to be the best with home grown new potatoes - we do this as well and they have not fallen apart as yet.
