Now That The Blight Is Over?
« on: July 21, 2009, 10:58 »
Having lost all the tomatoes to blight I've dug them all out. Two questions:-

1.  Do I have to do anything to the soil and canes?

2.  What can I put in the bed now?

What a shame.

1. No you could clean the canes with a mild disinfectant or Jeyes fluid, but not sure I'd bother.

2. Anything as long as it's not part of the tomato family ie spuds. Leeks, salads, spring brassicas, or late carrots can all be planted now.

Thanks green girl.  I wasn't planning on spuds, we dont eat enough og them to warrant it.

I was thinking of carrots.  I hadn't thought about leeks.  I was also thinking of endive and curly endive and Swiss chard.  I don't think I'm too late for them.

Get that curly endive - which your neighbours call chicory - and maybe some chicory which they call endive -in.  Funny lot the French they do it to annoy. It's not too late and with out recent endless autumns the frisee endive will go on for months into what I think of as winter.
