Jam and Chutney equipment
« on: July 20, 2009, 22:25 »
OK I have the book and there are three recipes I want to make NOW!  Anyone have any recommendations for where to buy equipment?  Quick look on the internet suggests about £35 for a preserving pan, does this seem about right?

It does sound about right; if you go to the Allotment Shop link at the top of the page you'll see Lakeland - who do lots of kitchen equipment including jam making stuff.

Their preserving pan is about £40, and they are always slightly more expensive than other outlets - but excellent quality.

Edit - do you have a big casserole dish?  I've got a big Le Creuset cast iron one which I use for chutneys.  Admittedly you need to make sure it doesn't have any chips in the enamel, and it takes a while for the liquid to evaporate, but I've not (yet) succumbed to having to buy a large preserving pan as well.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have the lakeland pan and omg it hardly ever goes away it was worth every single penny, I also have the jar funnel from lakeland too, dont always use it but it comes in handy when i do onion chutney as its so sticky, if it gets on the jar its like treacle

I just use my big stock pot and it is fine.  Maybe one of these days I will treat myself to a proper jelly pan but in the meantime I don't have the disposable income or somewhere to store more equipment.
