Hiya,
I used to make a lot of jam and chutney and used to use a company called bristol bottle company as a jar supplier.
Don't know their address anymore but you could probably find them on the internet.
Often the jar cost me more than the product inside it!
The price of commercialism eh!

I am now using Freeman and Harding for mine.  Very prompt delivery, very securely packed and decently priced.   My Emetpack jars arrived a couple of days ago with several breakages. >:(
Cheese makes everything better.

Thanks for that, I will look them up and compare prices!
I don't do it on such a large scale anymore but you never know, may get back into it again.
Cheers

Hi, just to say I use Carters Packaging whi sell on ebay and they are superb, do lots of jars, jam pot covers etc and delivery is excellent.. 64p for a 1lb jar with gold lid, delivered. When you live in the middle of nowhere like me, that sort of service is well worth it.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

Im having difficulty justifying paying for jars when Tesco 1lb marmalade in a jar is 27p. Surely its more economical to buy the cheap jam and chuck it away just to get the jar.

Am I missing something?

I agree lardman, that is the cheapest way to do it.  I intend to sell my stuff so it can't have any writing on it and they all have to look the same.

I have to admit using Te$co Gold coffee jars. Nice gold lid & no writing on them. (They've been remarked on a folk thought I'd bought them).

Can only manage about 100 in a year though without shaking too much.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You are all absolutly right with the jars.  Some friends want to buy my jam but to even cover costs it works out at £1-50 for a little jar   Who in their right mind will pay that?????? Especially as mine are the very small jars .
Still I'm enjoying making jams/chutneys but I don't think it would ever be viable as a business ::)

I havn't costed mine as I don't know how well they will go down on the stall.  My lovely six sided 12oz jars and gold lids work out at 65p each including postage.  Most of the  ingredients I grew myself.

If this is successful I'll buy in bulk to save even more and do exact costings.  I'll also grow veg specifically to use as ingredients.

Actually, it's not about making money, it's something to do with my time.  If it all goes wrong there will be a lot of pickles given away at Christmas. :D

I agree, they have a great product and when it goes well they are very good.  Lots of people on here have bought from with no problems.  Mine might have been a one off, but they were not that interested in sorting it out.

Having said that, I'm going to use them again and hope it was just a blip.  Their hexagonal jars look the business.

I have just found an old granny in the village who not only eats that french style Bonne Maman jams, but keeps the jars as well! I think they are fab for any jams or chutneys because they are so easy to fill, I know that they have a brand name on them, but it might be worth putting up a postcard in the local post office/ shop to ask. She has just given me 26 jars. In exchange, I'll give her one or two full ones in return.

I made about 100 jars of stuff for the school Christmas fair last year. I put a call out to all the other moms who started to collect their jars. Any that I didn't want, I just took to recycling. (Yes, I did several trips to the bottle bank...) It did work, though.
