Hi all,

I'm hoping the the apple growers can help out here...

2 years ago I bought an eating apple on a dwarf rootstock to put in the allotment.

I had no fruit at all last year, but that was ok as it was it's first year anyway but this year I have a fair amount.  The trouble is, all of the books and tinterweb articles I see about it say that it should be a large red apple, yet the fruit it has produced is smaller than golf balls.

I made a point in May/June of getting rid of the small swellings of apples that didn't fall in the June Drop and was left with a modest amount of crab apple sized baby apples.

I haven't done anything with this tree yet, as it's too small to warrant pruning.

The variety is supposed to be Jonagold.

My question is this;  as the fruits are only as big as large crab apples / apricots, if I remove more of them will I get fewer but larger fruit this late in the season?

Piccy to come later tonight.

I was walking through a commercial orchard this morning.  That is about the size of the apples on their ancient trees and the ones in my little orchard are about the same.

Give it time! they will swell.

Cheers,

Gillie

Phew!  pleased to hear it!

the reason I was concerned is that I have 2 other apple trees and the apples are almost, well, apple sized on them!

Jonagold's are picked mid October, many others are September so it also appears that they are a late(er) apple and so I guess take a bit longer to develop.
