Once the plants have finished fruiting, you can rim back to about 4" above the ground to allow the new leaves to develop.

Thanks for this link and advice.. 

My strawberries fruited really well this year - we made jam too! I was wondering what to do next  - I will trim the leaves back as described but would not have considered doing this without the advice as they are looking really healthy.

I had considered lifting the lot and replanting through a ground-cover membrane to supress weeds (not that I had much bother this year keeping the bed clean) but I thought it might help keep next years fruit clean without the use of straw. Any advice, please?
