Strawberries

Should I be hacking back growth and preparing for the winter now? What kind of organic feed should I treat the plants to and when? I'm going to remove the straw mulch today but wondered what else I should do.

Cheers

Once the plants have finished fruiting, you can rim back to about 4" above the ground to allow the new leaves to develop.

This is the RHS way of caring for them........

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I got rid of my strawberry bed last year as my back wouldn't take the picking.  I used to save wood ash in a dust bin- it needs to be kept dry until use- from the log burner .  I hoed it in about March time, always had a really big crop.

Thanks for this link and advice..  :)

My strawberries fruited really well this year - we made jam too! I was wondering what to do next  ::) - I will trim the leaves back as described but would not have considered doing this without the advice as they are looking really healthy.

I had considered lifting the lot and replanting through a ground-cover membrane to supress weeds (not that I had much bother this year keeping the bed clean) but I thought it might help keep next years fruit clean without the use of straw. Any advice, please?
