has the rain helped main crop spuds?
« on: July 17, 2009, 21:51 »
After the dry spell I am hoping that the rain has boosted crops?

Am I holding out hopelessly  ::) ?

I was thinking just the same today.  They say keep watering your potatoes to ensure a good crop - we couldn't do more than the weather has done!

I hope so, my Romano tops were standing proud and looking green this evening, mind you it did er, wee wee down here last night. Beetroot seemed to grow 2/3" overnight.
Plants really do love the rain as opposed to tap water.
Digging my first earlies up this weekend , so hoping for a good crop. :)

3 buckets full of first earlies eaten - they were lovely!

Next starting on anything else including a dig at the main crop.

I want to avoid blight and / or wireworm beating me to it....... so the rain may make a difference - and if it is a positive difference it will be more than welcomed but it'll have to get on with it or the spuds will be up-up-and-away very soon!!  ;)

I planted five rows of Romano Maincrop on the 10th April. With all the rain we have had this past few weeks I decided today to dig up a plant to see how they are all getting on.

From one plant I got 3 1/2 pounds of beautiful spuds, not a mark or blemish on them. They are perfect, the haulms are starting to die back so in the next week or so I will dig them all up and store in Hessian sacks
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Sounds brilliant!

Keep an eye out for blight though.... I am pretty sure I have the beginnings of this year's on my plot.

Tipped out our four morrison buckets yesterday, which had one Maris Bard (fe) in each and we had nearly three kilos.

Will be digging up those at school tomorrow and am taking a couple of buckets ...... ever hopeful, me

I'm amazed that under the thick canopy of my very tall pink fir apple spuds, the soil is pretty dry despite the unrelenting rain we've had.  Still I've just dug a very respectable 20 weirdly shaped spuds from one plant.

It is quite surprising how much of a downpour is needed to soak well into the ground.

After all the persistent precipitation we've had the soil surface still dries out quickly but deeper down there's moisture.  ;)

well I've put Rooster maincrop into a very poor bed and dug out one row of 4 plants because they were beginning to overshadow the curly kale.

I expected to see maybe bantie egg sized tubers, as it's my understanding that these shouldn't be ready until about October but they were a really worthwhile crop!  10lbs from 4 plants!

So I'd say yes, the rain has helped!

Strictly speaking a second early, but I grow them as a maincrop, these were just two of the spuds I got off one Kestrel plant. 2lb 7ozs between them. Didn't weigh the others, I suppose I should have but they all got chucked in with some other I dug up.

This are the best I ever done with this variety AND no slugs!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
