red alert toms
« on: July 17, 2009, 14:20 »
I'm very happy with my red alert toms.  They were early as they should be and loads of them, a bush tom.  I have just noticed they are half price on T&M if I have inspired you, you may get them cheaper else where though.  £1.14 for 30 seeds not cheap and thats half price.

Anyway when tasting them they have a very tom sauce taste to them to me (bad grammer I know).  Has anyone tried making tom sauce with these particular toms.

I made sauce from mine last year, but they have too many pips in for me, so bought plum tom seeds this year. But i think the Red Alert are nice to eat just as they are

I'd just like to taste one, because mine have no toms yet.

Sorry, can't help cos i think ripening depends on how warm it is
So this weather isn't helping any of us, sad but true :(

Lisa I've got loads of green toms, don't forget the red alert are early maturing ones anyway, and they did.  But its about three a day from each plant.

I've got an orange banana tom teasing me at the mo', I reckon another 5 days and it will be ready for picking, and after all that long wait and anticipation I bet it doesn't taste as nice as I thought it might.

I've grown my red alert this year from seeds saved last year - doing very well too - still mostly green though!
For the latest on the BIG project, read my blog.

I've grown Red Cherry, loads and loads on each plant but too tart for me  :tongue2:

I've also grown Sungold,  now these are in a class of their own, not only are they a pretty yellow colour,  they  taste soooo sweet too,  delicious!

Each to their own, but i don't like the very sweet cherry toms like sungold. I'm looking for a tart tomato....but not found one yet. Looks like i have to try Red Cherry....so where did you get your seeds?

I must have got them as a freebie Lesley, because I've just looked if I've any left for you to have but I can't find a packet  :(

You get lots of toms to a plant with them being small, but I wasn't thrilled with the taste of  them at all.

Thanks for looking (though I wasn't after a freebie) it sounded as if they would be good for me.
