 I have read about using an innoculum of azotobacter, the N fixing bacteria, along with peas and beans as you plant them.
Would this help and where do you get it :?:

I've always found pea / bean roots to be covered in nodules so I can't see that it would help much.

Wow  Jim T ! these things are usually grown in a lab and I cant see how you would get hold of them and even if you could it would be worth it.

Like Wg says pea and bean roots are usually covered in them which contain all the nitrogen fixing bacteria they need.In fact they make more than the plant really needs if you leave the roots in the ground over winter they release it in to the soil as they break down.

I used to have some in the lab as student... but N2 fixing bacteria are in the soil anyway... they reside in the nodules of pea and beans.

The pea/bean innoculant is available through most good garden centres and through mail order seed places, but you have to search the catalogues for them. They were a big deal over here a few years ago, supposedly getting the beans and peas off to a roaring start, but I never noticed the difference when I tried it. Just good weather, good soil, some rain and sun did just as well, so I too would say save your money. The roots create lots for themself and when you're finished harvesting, cut the stems off at the ground and leave all the roots in place.
