Broody with bare underside
« on: July 14, 2009, 11:46 »
Hi All,

I have a girl that has gone broody.  When I picked her up to collect the eggs this morning I noticed that her underside was bare  is it normal for this to happen?   I am guessing that bare skin helps heat conduction, is that right?

I have decided after isolating her and turfing her out of the nest box every day, with no effect, that I will leave her to her own devices.   I would love to hatch some eggs for the experience but don't know what I'd do with the boys.

I have a hen that has been broody for 6 weeks.  I have tried everything from chucking her out of the nest box for 6 hours to putting a bag of frozen peas in the nest box, and the only results were a very cross broody hen!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

makes you sympathise with men doesn't it?
Some recommend putting them in a separate run with no straw or anything that can be used to make a nest for a few days and it should snap them out of it

Thanks for the reassurance.   I am leaving her to it and hope that it doesn't last the full three weeks.  One of the other hens is picking on her so I may have to move her into her own space.
