My vets have been super with my dogs over the years cannot fault them.
But chickens thats another story they have no idea and told me so after I had spent over £300 on three hens which all died.
Yes they will not turn a sick animal away but I wish they had been truthfull with me to start with and said they did not know.
Oh well we learn so I contacted a vet on line the cost of a phone call he was great he told me I should not have been given cat liquid wormer for treating hens. I was told to syring a set amount down each hen daily for a week we had 6 hens that was fun good job my girls allowed me to do it.
If you have a vet who knows about poultry your very lucky but a lot of us dont.
I still use my vets but now ( a few years later) I know what I need or find out and the vets will get me what I want after a chat I just pay for the items.

I am so sorry for your loss.  It's never easy to lose one of our girls.  As for the red mites - Frontline those hens!  That stuff is brilliant!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

i know i am very lucky as we do have a vet that specializes in poultry, because they are considered as livestock they are treated at the large animals practice and the cost of treatment is low, very low compared to what some people have paid on here, all i was trying to point out is that if a bird is seriously hurt and the owner has no intention of taking it to a vet for whatever reason then it's best to put it down sooner rather than leave it to see what happens and end up with a dead bird that has suffered prior to death.

I feel that it's the responsibility of the owner to research as much as possible, knowledge is power. If you know what you are talking about when you speak to a vet they will listen. They are getting better as more and more people are keeping poultry as pets. The problem is, as Aunt Sally has said many times, chickens are prey animals and hide their symptoms as do rabbits - so you have to just carefully watch their behaviour. The only thing I can compare it too is when your child is poorly but hasn't got the language skills to tell you about it they smell different. Nic.

The vets dont seem too interested in chickens, maybe seen round here as cheap and disposable, and as I am not a farmer then why am I keeping them, maybe have to try another vets.
don't know where you are in Derbyshire but I can reccomend a really good specialist poultry Vet in North Notts, you can often get advice over the phone and they will send out medication in the post.  I know a turkey farmer in stamford uses her!  It's called the, 'Retford Poultry partnership'
