Runny Noses
« on: July 12, 2009, 16:44 »
2 of our chooks look as if they might have runny noses. Is this anything we should be worried about? They seem bright enough, and dont show any other sign of anything, but OH cant help but worry.

Your thoughts and comments are, as usual, much appreciated.

That sounds like what a few of ours has, but we have the occasional sneeze and shaking head thrown in.  It doesn't seem as serious as mycoplasmosis, but took one to the vet and she gave me aureomycin like Joyfull and chickenlady use, and it is definitely helping

Vet said there is no rattling on their chests, so its probably just in the ENT areas.  Try to get some antibitoics into them, or it could develop into something worse

one of my chooks used to have a runny nose because her beak was clipped too short (I didn't clip it) and food and grass and dirt and all sorts used to get stuck in her nostrils.  We wipped her beak on a daily basis and it seems to be rounding out at the tip so she's not getting things stuck there anymore and her nose isn't running any more.  I once had to pull a little stick out of  her nose. She didn't like that much :)

But throughout, her wattle and comb stayed perky and her eyes bright.  Good luck I'd be interested to know how you go.

Been to the vet with a chook now. She said all was well apart from the runny nose, and has given us antibiotics for all 4. A 6 day course, and we've not to eat the eggs for 30 days!!!!!!!!

What a nightmare it is trying to squirt the med down the throats with a syringe too!

i put some respite in their water if they ever get snuffly - mine had this when i first got them pol last year i think they could have been a bit stressed with the move

i hope they are on there way to recovery now, same as above when i first bought the girls home the next day they both had snuffley noses, blowing bubbles, it was alwful, the breeder came round and treated them for me, apparently stress of a move could have bought it on.   nickyx

That's the med finished now, and I have to admit they are looking a LOT better!

Still 3 weeks till we can eat the eggs again though, seems like overkill but he vet was insistant!

Too bad you can't let the chickens know they can take a vacation from laying eggs for a while :)  It seems like a lot of effort to waste not being able to do anything with the eggs.   :nowink:
