Egg is hatching!!
« on: July 11, 2009, 15:55 »
The sun is shining and it is not raining so I thought I would pick my broody Emma off her nest for her daily 20 mins. Noticed that one of the eggs has started to hatch so put her straight back. What do I do now? Didnt think they were due till monday!

No I haven't bought the chick crumbs!! Didn't want to count my chickens until they hatched (still don't). Feedstore is only a pleasant dog walk up the lane though, shall I leave alone today and check in the morning?

leave the hen alone for now and take that pleasant walk  :D, dont forget a shallow dish with marbles in it to prevent the chicks drowning.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you especially after that horrible time with your girls before.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Emma chicken hasn't eaten or drank since fri morning and chick (hopefully not the only one) is at least 24 hrs old. When do I need to start worrying about the eating and drinking issue?

make sure you put the water and feed close to mum she will not want to move off her eggs if she can still feel them moving and hatching.

The one chick, the eldest I presume has been moving about a bit this afternoon. Didnt see it feed, but I know its been in the food as it has pooped on it (typical). Has also been trying to get moms attention by pecking at her face! I know there are 2 live chicks, today was day 21 will she admit defeat over the others if not hatched by tomorrow? Do I have to intervene? I presume the empty shells will need clearing away?

some are known to hatch up to day 23/24 so give her a little bit longer. Just keep changing the feed and water - and yes they do poop in both  :D

The broody will know when no more are going to hatch, she gives it a couple of days then leaves the nest.

Ok no more questions I promise! There are 3 chicks on last count and I'm very happy with that out of just 5 eggs! If there is a little girl I will be eggstatic, if not I shall enjoy looking after the little boys until they hopefully get big enough for you now what!! Cheers for the advice!  8)
