how old before chicks lay

i,m new to this chicken keeping, we have bought 4 girls, 1 has a big bright red cone,the other 3 are still growing there's. how do you know when they are ready to lay,we have had them 3 weeks now and we are getting impatientwaiting for our first egg

Hi, How old are your girls and what breeds are they. Different breeds have different combs and start laying at different ages. Also some will lay eggs more in their first year or so whilst pure breeds lay at a slower pace.

We had (so we were told!) 3 point of lay\ girls at the end of april. two of them starting laying about two weeks later and the third only started laying this week!

point of lay means they are anywhere between 16-22 week really. they could start laying at anywhere in that time. the first hybrids i got took about 4 weeks or so after i got them and i think they were probably 20 weeks old when i picked them up.

hip hip horray, one of our four girls as finally laid an egg, its a small egg but its a start.
we are so proud of our girls we just had to tell everyone

yep it's a fantastic feeling getting your very first egg

. So who gets to eat it and how's it being cooked? I had our first one (my hens so my egg

) and had it poached on toast. Still love collecting the eggs now.

got to wait for a second one so my 6 and 10 year old don't fight, saying that they may get one from supermarket and i may get the fresh one, could i be a nasty dad and do that to the kids

, yep as long as the wife don't get to the egg first

Kept chickens for a few years but it's always a thrill when new ones lay.; my latest three laid three eggs for first time today. just had to pick them all up for a cuddle. Sad or what. lol
