suppose it depends on the size of the tyre, at a guess average car tyre around three-four spuds, i would fill 2 deep with compost and plant them 6 inches down and as they grow build the tyres up and fill with compost

    tyres is correct but appologise is not !!

Start with one tyre and one tattie - maybe 2 if it is an early variety.  Fill up with a nice soil / manure mix.   When tattie emerges by 3 inches, add a tyre and more soil mix (carefully).   If you have comfrey then wilt the leaves & add that too.   Stop when you get bored but all 5 tyres will work.  Or try a 2 + 3 arrangement

Wheres spell, check when you need it, also I could do with a typist and an it manager. We have three computers on the ward I work on and about that many nurses who can use them. Im sure my spelling gives pleasure to all those reading the notes however.
Thanks for the advice, will try that thursday.

i'm a bit worried about this trye/spud growing lark,
a couple of things realy
1.have you got enough soil/compost.

2. when they are 3-4 high they will take some lifting off with all that soil stuck inside them.on the other hand it would be a nightmare trying to scoop the soil out of them.

3.contamination from the rubber or asbestos from the brakes(you never know) or just plain old brake dust dont matter how you clean them they will always be dirty.and the older they are the more dodo rubs of em cus the rubber is starting to rot

thats it realy
feed the soil not the plants

Ya just push 'em over.  Ideally catching some in a wheelbarrow

I always used tyres for rowing and never suffered any problems with contamination; apart from the green skin and yellow eyes that is

i used them last year, good job-but hard to get them apart when harvesting also a nightmare for slugs,i would tape or seal with silicone the joints to stop them.

it just drains away if there's too much same as in any tub, even in the rims of the tyres; the soil absorbs and distributes

seems like a lot of hard work to me,if you have no room in the ground then it must be tubs or buckets
