Home made seaweed feed
« on: July 10, 2009, 08:23 »
A few months ago I collected some dried seaweed from a beach and bought it home. I have left it in a bucket and some rain water has got in. It has created a dark muddy color water which stinks terrible. I have bottled it and hung the weed up in the greenhouse to dry.

The question is can I dilute the liquid as a general feed for veg like lettuce, potatoes, peas etc (not the flower producing) safely, and if so, what dilution ratio ?

Thanks.

Try it, to be honest I buy it, £3.50 and it will last me the season, hardly breaks the bank.

Won't it contain rather a lot of salt?  I would be careful as you might kill things.  It probably would be better to use the proper commercial product.

Cheers,

I rinsed it well when I first bought it home to get the salt out :-)

The main reason I collected it is for garden compost. The liquid is an extra bonus

It's impossible to give a dilution ratio as the original strength is not known.

However, nettle and comfrey liquid are diluted to a weak tea strength and you may find that that is ok for the seaweed feed too.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

That's interesting - I've just got two big bags of the stuff from the shore near me. I am going to let it dry then shred it and add it to my compost heap. I was thinking of washing it but my OH says the Jersey farmers just sprerad it on the land for their pots. Anyone in Jersey confirm that?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Have a look here......

That's why International Kidneys don't taste like Jersey Royals!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

experiment on some weeds. If they thrive or if they die you know the answer

It smells evil but thats a good sign. Before I planted my peas out I dug some into the soil as a compost. Suffice to say the peas are like giants and have many pods (Hurst and Kelevdon Wonder)
