chicks with blood in poo - help!
« on: July 09, 2009, 09:14 »
I've just lost 6 of twelve chicks, which have blood in their poo, otherwise appear perfectly healthy and chirpy...
Two more looking a bit crook today though - anyone have any idea what this is? they're about 4 weeks old, and have been fed on chick crumbs.

If they have blood in there poo I would guess it is coccidiosis.
Do they have contact with other older chickens?
Are they in a brooder?

Are they being feed medictated chick crumb?

I would
1. Get some none medicated chick crumb.
2. Get some Coxoid.

Why none medicated chick crumb? Because you do not want to double dose them.

Sounds like coccidiosis.

Are the chick crumbs medicated?

You will have to go to the vet and get some Amprolium (sp?) which is a coccidistat.

Unfortunately coccidiosis can very quickly overwhelm chicks as they have no immunity :(

Hmm, looking at the symptoms online, I think that is what they have. they were in with a 12 week old chick, could they have caught it from him? :(  Four left, will try and get some meds tomorrow.
They were in a brooder orginally, but in the heatwave, i moved them outside. Back now though.
Thanks.

i had this and mine never did have coccidiosis , i did a very lenghty phone call with foxy on here an she really put my mind at rest  :D  although i would not like to say yours are fine .

i saw about 3 poos from the 6 babes that had what looked like blood in the poo so i freaked out as well but within 24 hours it had all stopped but it didntstop me rushing out a buying the stuff needed to treat it .

The Key to why I think this is coccidiosis  karlooben is that ajkula77 has already lost 6 out of 12 chicks and has definite blood in the pooo.

i think i might have found blood in a poo of a 3 and half week old hybrid, i am not sure looks like something that has been eaten ie a berry but my chicks are in a shed and only have straw for bedding , with a bale of straw that they sit on so i guess they cold have found something in that, they are bright and alert ,i have only found one poo with possible blood. do you think i should be worried, they have had medicated chick crumb since i got them 10 days ago.

cocci droppings look a bit like this first piccy, while a chick looks like the photo below, ruffled and typically "hunched"
