Strawberry Runners
« on: July 07, 2009, 11:18 »
None of the books I have tell me what to do with strawberry runners.  I'm sure it must have been dealt with before.  Or can anyone please throw me in the direction of an article on the best way to deal with them.

It's their first year and they are producing babies right, left and centre.

in short, place the ends of the runners onto smaller pots of compost. Hold them down in the compost with a hairpin, bent straw, cocktail stick etc. to stop them moving in the wind, and wait for up to 6 weeks (tho it can often happen in 2 - 4 weeks) for them to take root, and then separate from the parent plant by cutting the stalk. Keep them watered during the process. You can also look up strawberry runners under search above for more postings :)

I couldn't  have put it better myself.
That is what we have done for years, as I sawy dear old dad do it.
It's better to be over the Hill than under it!!

I juts let them naturally put root down into the soil, then dig & up & put them where I want them to be!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Is it not better, while they are fruiting, to nip the runners off? I thought it diverted energy away from the fruit?

Mine are sending them out like mad and I've had a heck of a job keeping up with it!

Thanks for the information everyone.  They were only put in this spring so I didn't ecpect too much.  The birds got the first few   They didn't get the second lot, but there are a lot of runners.   At least now I know what to do with them.

Scabs, runners take very little energy from the plant. Its a natural way the plant continues to live (by putting out runners) so if you want a lot more fruit, let them run and peg them down where it's more convenient.
