Hello again everyone in Poultry Land,

The baby chooks we've rescued are doing well. We're putting them in the chicken tractor during the day and bringing them in at night.  It's still pretty chilly at night here, down to 10C at night though could get down to 0C (though very rarely).  How old do the chicks need to be before they can tolerate such cold nights?  Should I ween them from the hot water bottle at some stage? Right now I only put one in at night as they're not very interested in it during the day.

I appreciate your tips,
Vi

When you say "in" what do you mean? In your house (home)or In the coop?
All chickens should be kept in a coop at night time.
It is a safe haven against predictors such as foxes and badgers.

PREDICTORS? Is that the chicken eating animal that hides under the hedge guessing which hen will be the tastiest?

"I predict that the fat bird with the big combs will be tastier than the wee baldy ex batt!"

Hello Vi,
Where are you?  Pop it into your Profile.

Yes, Roughlee is right; all hens should be in a coop, shed or barn at night, for safety against predators.

Hi There,

by 'in' I mean in my house, in fact in my dining room :)  The chicken tractor we have is fox proof nearly bullet proof really, but the foxes and local dogs are really the only worry not so much the bullets ;)

I'm concerned that the nights are a bit chilly and i'm not sure when the little squeekers are ready for the cooler temperatures.  They're a little fidgity in the cardboard box I keep them in when they're in the house for the night.  But they're not ready to be in the main chook house with the older hens yet.

The lowest temperatures are likely to be around 5C or so. very occasionally it gets down to 0C but that's rare and that sort of weather isn't expected any time soon.

I thought I'd updated my profile with my location but apparently I didn't save it right.

I'm in Eastern Australia. (it's winter time and a chilly 15C)

Thank you for your tips

:tongue2: I checked the contents but not the subject. Oh
Well in that case after 5 weeks they should be off the heat totally and should be fully feathered.  I would line the coop with alot of straw and they should cuddle up and be toasty.
Well thats what I would do.

Think I might get me eyes tested
