The red onion has bolted
« on: July 04, 2009, 22:00 »
The warm weather has done nothing at all for my red onions (grown from sets). We'll get something off them but they won't keep for any length of time. But better something than nothing.

At least I think it's the weather. The white ones aren't ready for lifting yet. Not that they are going to be anything to write home about either.

How is everyone else doing with their onions? Grew mine from sets - locally those grown from seed haven't done anything great this year with the warm, wet and humid after the dry spring.

The red ones are reliable for not doing very well.........if you get my point :(
I don't bother with them any more, not worth the effort, and not that expensive to buy in T@sc@

Sets great.

Seeds rubbish.

I don't bother with red ones either.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ceri it seems we all have bad days. They are the ones that teach you experience (unfortunately).

There was a family discussion on onions done the plot recently. We came to the price conclusion and decided that next year we'll grow lots of leeks because they are expensive and onions are not.

But I'm glad that sulking red onions may not be a quirk of my allotment.

Same here.  Red onions rubbish, white Japanese onions not bad.  Either way I'll not bother with onions again due to space considerations.  Them and potatoes with the exception of some first earlies.

Cheese makes everything better.

my reds are pretty poor too, compared to the white ones.i wonder why this is ? the ones grown for the supermarkets dont seem to have a problem.could it be the variety?i,m not going to give up on them yet, i'll have one more go next year and try 2 different varietys get some manure in the soil and if that produces the same results i'll give up. :)

Reds .......well em not as good as whites. all from sets.

I grew some ailsa craig from seed and they doing better than all of em.

Planted out a second lot of leeks that i grew as backups yesterday as the first lot are doing really well.

Going to have another go with the reds next year though. They will not beat me  8)

Last year I planted Japanese onions and red onions in the autumn and got a massive crop of big and beautiful bulbs for both. So I did the same this year and got rotters, bolters and golf balls. Most annoying after all that careful weeding. Perhaps it was the cold winter?

I have red, white and shallots put them in left them to it apart from odd bit of weeding. No problems up to now. Even pulled a couple for emergency cooking

My reds or some of them anyway have bolted.  the whites in the same bed are fine. Both have been treated in exactly the same way. ((shrug))

My first year but have noticed a huge difference between my red onion and white grown from sets.
Won't bother with red again, bolted, small, keeled over etc, I could have used the space for more white onions or leeks as others have already said.

ps. I doubt I'll bother with broad beans again, but that's a different story.  :nowink:
